The Block House Exhibition

Goals

In 2019, Canopy partnered with the Chicago Architecture Biennial for a series of exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center and OPEN Center for the Arts, collectively titled “The Block House” which explored the gap in affordable housing in Chicago.

Results

We collected data that compared area median income, cost of living, displacement pressure and rent cost burden against neighborhoods in Chicago. With this data we asked: how can we minimize this gap, how can we make it easier for individuals and families to gain access to existing affordable housing, how can we simplify the process of building new affordable housing options, and how can we come together to make this process more manageable?

The research came together in a month-long exhibition at OPEN Center for the Arts in Little Village.
