Lawrence Hall LGBTQ Youth Center
Goals
Lawrence Hall is a Chicago-based organization dedicated to empowering individuals who have experienced trauma by fostering healing, stability, and community connection. For this project, Canopy was invited to renovate an existing two-flat apartment building into a supportive housing facility for LGBTQ youth ages 12–17 who are experiencing instability in their families or homes.
The primary goal of this renovation is to create a safe, affirming, and nurturing environment where residents can feel at home, access supportive services, and build community.
Results
The renovation reconfigures the existing space to include additional sleeping quarters and expanded office areas for onsite support services. The first floor will feature a quiet nook for reflection and a large communal kitchen designed to bring residents together for shared meals. Outdoors, a wrap-around back porch and basketball courts will promote connection and well-being through play and casual interaction. In the basement, an art studio will offer space for creative expression and healing.
Throughout the building, trauma-informed design principles will guide every detail to ensure a sense of safety, serenity, and belonging for all residents.
