Irene McCoy Gaines Apartments Reopens Revitalized
With codevelopers CHA and Michaels, Canopy celebrated the grand re-opening of Irene McCoy Gaines Apartments, a 17-story high-rise community with 150 units of affordable housing that recently underwent extensive rehabilitation. Speakers at the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Greg Olson, Regional Vice President of Development for The Michaels Organization, CHA CEO Tracey Scott, Alderman Jason Ervin, and Mr. Hawkins, resident leader and building president.
The $60 million rehabilitation effort for the building includes new HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, and new amenity spaces that include renovated and expanded dining and community rooms, reception areas, meeting, game, exercise, and computer rooms, and updated laundry spaces. Apartments were updated with new flooring, painting, LED lighting, and upgraded kitchens and baths, including heating and air conditioning that allow residents to control the temperature. The exterior of the property has also been landscaped to encourage walking and recreation.
