Goals

In 2021, Canopy partnered with the Chicago Architecture Center and other leading designers to explore how developments in American society and experience, including shifts in demographics, the economy, and the environment, are forcing us to reexamine the concept of house and home.

Results

The exhibit, titled “Housing for a Changing Nation,” considers how local architects are reimagining the notions of home and community at a moment when much of our existing late 19th- and 20th-century housing stock has become outdated.

Canopy presented a model of “The 100-Year Lot,” a real-life project designed for a multi-generational family. The property’s existing two-flat is home to parents with young children and connects to a new two-story apartment at the rear. The additional building houses an elderly parent or couple plus rental units for extra income. The project is LEED certified and prioritized energy efficiency, natural vegetation, passive solar design and storm water management as the primary influences in establishing a holistic sustainable design.
