Sabina Choragwicki

  • Associate AIA

Sabina Choragwicki graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Architecture with her Masters degree in 2020 and a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Studies with an English minor in 2018. She is a Polish American who grew up on the south side of Chicago. Sabina has also lived in Barcelona, where she attended the Escola Tecnica Superior d’Arquitectura del Valles architecture school. Her immigrant background and time living abroad have cultivated a spirit for travel, and she was awarded the Ryerson Traveling Fellowship from UIUC in 2020 for her thesis “Precedent and Interpretation.”

Sabina is a passionate advocate for social change and enjoys working on projects that interface with housing affordability and sustainability, as well as work that seeks to uplift marginalized groups and communities. Since joining Canopy, Sabina has contributed to projects such as Encuentro Square, one of Chicago’s largest new affordable housing developments, Starling, a community center/café with a radical ownership structure in North Lawndale, and Latinos Progresando’s adaptive reuse office space for legal and mental health services in Little Village. Her tenure at Canopy has included contributions to the Chicago Architecture Center’s exhibit “On Housing,” the CAC’s “Missing Middle” exhibit and competition, and the Chicago Architecture Biennal window display in collaboration with the Open Center for the Arts. Sabina deeply values the balance between engaging in built work and exhibited art/architecture.

She is currently studying for her final ARE Exam and is pursuing licensure. Outside of the office, Sabina is an avid thrifter and reader, practices yoga, volunteers at her local animal shelter, and loves spending time outdoors with her dog.

What was your first job?

Tae Kwon Do instructor. Teaching young children how to kick/punch each other was pure chaos but so much fun.

What's your favorite season?

Springtime, just when you think the winter will last forever, you see that first flower pop up.

Ideal superpower?

To be able to talk to animals

What is your beverage of choice?

As someone with at least 3 various beverages on my desk at the same time, this is an impossible question.

If you could be any material, what material would you be?

Charred wood. As an exterior cladding material, the wood is burned to make it more resilient.

If you could live in any other era besides right now, what would you choose?

1920’s Paris. The art and literary scene with Picasso, Hemingway, James Joyce, Fitzegerald must have been amazing.

If you had to pick one word that best represents Canopy's culture, what would it be, and why?

Passionate. I’m thrilled to be part of a team of folks that are driven to make a positive impact on the world.
